What Is the TRX Suspension Training System?
TRX is the trailblazing workout modality from Fitness Anywhere, Inc. It uses gravity and bodyweight resistance to amplify balance and coordination. It is the cornerstone of the athletic programs in secondary schools and many professional sports teams. These include the NHL, NFL, and NBA.

What Does TRX Mean?
TRX stands for “Total Resistance Exercise.” Commander Randy Hetrick designed it in 1997 after having served as an operation captain for the Navy Seals for 14 years. He built the first TRX system using webbed straps from parachutes and belts worn in jiu-jitsu. The prototype consisted of parachute slings tied to anchor points with rubberized ship repair tools.
Hetrick’s invention resulted from searching for a solution for him and his colleagues’ frustration. This was the lack of space and traditional training equipment during missions. They spent most of their duty time aboard ships and submarines. His goal for the TRX was for it to be a mobile, travel-friendly workout tool that can train the entire body.
The US Marine Corps adopted Hetrick’s invention and training technique. This has since altered the approach to modern personal fitness.
History of Suspension Training
Most people may view this modern exercise philosophy as a passing trend, but its elements have existed in many variants for centuries. It was built upon from modalities the ancients employed, especially warriors who needed to be fit in battle. Chinese acrobats who achieved fame as the earliest known gymnastic champions. Rock climbers and 19th-century militia worldwide improved on the practices of their predecessors. Rock climbers combined weight exercises, ropes and climbing activities to prepare for expeditions.
